Mo Sakari Oramo

Mo Sakari Oramo is Chief Conductor of both the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He is also Principal Conductor of the West Coast Kokkola Opera and the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, and between 1998 and 2008 he was Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He is a regular guest conductor at the NDR Sinfonieorchester, Wiener Philharmoniker and Staatskapelle Dresden.

In the decade working with Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Oramo developed a strong love and understanding for British music which have brought him several recognitions. In 2004 he was appointed Honorary Doctor at the University of Central England in Birmingham, in recognition of his "outstanding contribution to the musical life of the city". In 2007, he was one of eight conductors of British orchestras to endorse the 10-year classical music outreach manifesto, "Building on Excellence: Orchestras for the 21st Century", with an aim to increase awareness of classical music in the UK, including giving free entry to all British schoolchildren to a classical music concert. In 2008 he received the Elgar Medal in recognition of his devotion to Edward Elgar's music and as a reflection of his passion for British music. And in 2009 Oramo was awarded an honorary OBE (Officer of the British Empire) in recognition of his efforts in British music life.

In addition to his conducting work, Oramo is an accomplished violinist and was originally concertmaster of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra where he was appointed Associate Principal Conductor after stepping in to conduct the orchestra at very short notice in 1993. He gives several performances a year as a violinist, and in 2014 he made his debut in the BBC Proms Chamber Music series, where he played Prokofiev's Sonata for two violins with Janine Jansen.

Oramo has conducted orchestras such as Berlin Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and Chicago Symphony Orchestra among others. He has even conducted opera, including the Finnish National Opera.
